Standing is a British labour economist and professorial research associate at SOAS University of London who co-founded the Basic Income Earth Network in 1986. He coined the term 'precariat' to describe workers stripped of security by globalisation, and has spent decades making the empirical and moral case that an unconditional basic income, funded from commonly owned wealth rather than charity, is a matter of social justice. From The Precariat to Plunder of the Commons, his books and his hands-on design of basic-income pilots have shaped how governments and movements think about guaranteeing every person an income floor.
