Leander Bindewald researches how the law defines money, and what those definitions rule out. His doctorate traced the words money and currency through United States financial legislation, from early banking law to recent crypto rulings, and found the definitions inconsistent enough to block new monetary designs. From 2012 to 2015 he ran Community Currencies in Action for the New Economics Foundation, a European Union project that built and studied local currencies across six regions. He now consults on currency design and writes for MONNETA, including a long report on the 2026 RAMICS congress on monetary diversity in Rio de Janeiro.
